Jim Guidry Commentaries Hurricane Ike Remembered
In Remembrance
Josephine Kidd Protz
J. Levy & Termini Funeral Home

(June 19, 1934 - June 10, 2008)

Josephine ‘Jo’ ProtzJosephine ‘Jo’ Protz, 73, of Galveston, passed away Tuesday, June 10, 2008 at Methodist Hospital in Houston.

A Memorial Service celebrating her life and contributions will be held, on her birthday, Thursday, June 19, 2008, at 11:30 am at the First Presbyterian Church, 1903 Church Street, Galveston, with Reverend David Green officiating.  A reception and luncheon will follow immediately in the Fellowship Hall.

Jo was born and reared in Newnan, Georgia.  She graduated from Newnan High School and went on to Mercer University in 1956 where she received her BA Degree in Sociology and Education.  After Mercer, she received a Master’s Degree at Southwestern Seminary in Fort Worth in Religious Education.  She met and married Edward L. Protz in 1958, and they would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary June 21.

Her first teaching assignment was in the Dallas Independent School district in 1958.  She worked there until 1967, then moved to Atlanta, Georgia.  For the next two and one half years, she focused her time and energy rearing her two young children.  After moving to Galveston in 1969, she obtained her certification as a special education teacher working with children who had learning disabilities.  She resumed teaching in the Galveston Independent School District where she taught in the elementary school program.

In 1989 she retired from GISD, obtained a GED teaching certificate, and began to teach in the Adult Education GED program at Galveston College.  She also served as counselor and advocate for her students when they encountered obstacles that would affect their ability to achieve their GED certificate.  In her second year the enrollment in her classes doubled.  Supporting and caring for the students was her passion.  She often said that teaching in the GED program was the highlight and most rewarding of all her career experiences.  Her 18 years in the GED program was interrupted in 2007 by an accidental fall in her home.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Ethel Garrett Kidd and Ernest W. Kidd, and her sister Ernestine Kidd.  She is survived by her husband Edward L. Protz, her son Stephen E. Protz and his wife Jane, and her daughter Laura S. Protz.  Also surviving her are her cousins Jack and Laverne Garrett, Amy, Mike, and Garrett Hutchings, Patsy Kidd Dennis, Jimmy and Nina Kidd.  She will be dearly missed by her family, her husband Ed of 50 years, her friends and her students.

In lieu of flowers, her family requests that contributions may be made to the ‘Josephine Kidd Protz GED Assistance Fund’ in care of St. Vincent’s House, 2817 Post Office St., Galveston TX, 77550.
