The Annual Emancipation Proclamation Reading and Prayer Breakfast at Ashton Villa attracted a large crowd. Master of Ceremonies Doug Matthews introduced Representative Al Edwards who sponsored legislation making Juneteenth a State Holiday.

Galveston Mayor Lyda Ann Thomas noted that it is appropriate that the memorial service for Ruth Kempner, her aunt, is on Juneteenth. Listen: RealPlayer MP3
"I believe she would be pleased to share her 'going home' with the celebration of Juneteenth," Thomas said. "Ruth Kempner was a freedom fighter in Galveston in the 1950s and 60s. Some of you fought with her; some of you may have fought against her."
Following the events at Ashton Villa, large crowds turned out for the Jubilee Parade which was followed by the Annie Mae Charles Jubilee Picnic at Wright Cuney Park.
