RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF NATIONAL JUNETEENTH HOLIDAY CAMPAIGN
WHEREAS, for more than 143 years, Juneteenth has been the most recognized African-American holiday observance in the United States; and
WHEREAS, Juneteenth commemorates the strength, courage and determination of African-Americans who survived the ordeals of slavery to live in freedom; and
WHEREAS, Juneteenth commemorates the day freedom was proclaimed to all slaves in the south by Union General Granger, on June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Texas, more than two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation by President Abraham Lincoln; and
WHEREAS, all Americans, no matter what their background, faith or race, share a common love for freedom, and because all Americans are committed to protecting and preserving their freedoms, and Juneteenth, along with July 4, completes the cycle of freedom for America’s independence day celebrations; and
WHEREAS, the Galveston Chamber of Commerce, founded in 1845 and already in existence at the time of the proclamation of freedom in 1865, supports the nationwide campaign to recognize Juneteenth as a national observance as recognition of our common heritage, our hopes for the continuing blessings of freedom, and as an important day in the history of Galveston.
BE IT RESOLVED, that the Galveston Chamber of Commerce adopts this resolution in support of the National Juneteenth Holiday Campaign and encourages participation of our members in the Annual Juneteenth National Holiday Observance on the 19th of June.
Passed this 19th day of June, 2008
