My interview is with Gene Hollier, an outstanding volunteer in the Bay Area who has been recognized for his many volunteer achievements, especially with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Listen
Some of Gene’s many awards and honors include the 2000 NASA Public Service Medal, 2000 Honoree of the prestigious Bay Area Turning Point’s "Men and Women of Heart Gala", 2000 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Speaker of the Year, 2003 Board of Directors of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, and, believe it or not, a Knighthood in the Thailand Order of the White Elephant!! Gene was knighted by the King of Thailand.
Gene is also an actor, who had a recurring role in the TV series, "Magnum P.I.", and has performed in movies, stage shows, and commercials. He owned his own security business, and is a former United States Air Force fighter pilot. Some highlights of his USAF career were tours as a fighter pilot in Viet Nam, rescue mission commander of continental Africa for an Apollo mission, and Air Attaché to the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand.
Gene is involved with many charitable organizations, like the Lunar Rendezvous, Bay Area Turning Point, Kidney Foundation, American Cancer Society, C.A.S.E. - The Longhorn Project at JSC and the Armand Bayou Nature Center, but the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo plays the most important part in his volunteer activities.
Gene joined the NASA/Clear Creek/Friendswood Go Texan Committee of the Houston Metro Go Texan Committee of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in 1986, and was selected as Outstanding Committeeman in 1994. He joined the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (HLSR) Speakers Committee in 1995, and has earned the “Mega Mouth” rating, which is the highest rating for a speaker, every year since his Rookie year. Gene is also the emcee for all the NASA Go Texan events.
In 1999, Gene originated and chaired a special program for the NASA/Clear Creek/Friendswood Go Texan Committee of the Houston Metro Go Texan Committee of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo called the Trail Boss Program. To date, this program has raised the equivalent of $310,000 in extra funds for the HLSR Scholarship Fund which provides a $10,000 scholarship award to a minimum of 8 graduating seniors from the Clear Creek and Friendswood Independent School Districts each Rodeo year.
If you would like Gene, or another member of the HLSR Speakers Committee, to speak to your organization, free of charge, or you would like more information on the NASA Go Texan Committee, please give Gene a call at 281 – 488 - 3143. The upcoming NASA Go Texan events are the “Cowboys and Cowgirls Who Cook” celebrity cook off on November 6, 2003, the “Wild Wild West” NASA Go Texan Fashion Show on February 6, 2004, and the “Crazy Horse Saloon” Trail ride Dinner Dance on February 24, 2004.
With his experience as an actor, a speaker, and an emcee, Gene uses his talents and skills to benefit numerous charitable organizations, and it is easy to see why he has been honored as an outstanding volunteer in the Bay Area Houston community.
