Pat Patton Interviews
Interview with Bobby Unser
from the GuidryNews.com Archives
Monday, March 15, 2004

photos by Lynda GuidryMy guest today is world famous race car driver and author, Bobby Unser. Listen

Some of Bobby’s many achievements include being the 3 time Indy 500 Champion, 2-time National Champion, 35 Career Indy Car Victories, 2-time winner of the International Race of Champions, 49 Career Pole Positions, Indy 500 Hall of Fame member, 13-time winner of the Pikes Peak Hill Climb and 8 “500” Mike Victories.

Bobby was also a Color commentator for ABC sports and a Race Analyst and commentator for the Canadian Broadcast company (CBC).  He is an Indy 500 Hall of Fame Member and International Motorsport Hall of Fame Member.  He was inducted into the AARWBA’s Legends in Racing in 1989, and was inducted into the International Motorsport Hall of Fame and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame in 1990.  Bobby is also one of the corporate industry’s premier spokesmen.  He has written two books, “Unser, An American Family Portrait” and his current motivational book “Winners are Driven”.

In 1968, Bobby became the first driver to break the 170 mile an hour barrier when he was qualifying for the Indy 500.  He made the world news, and went on to win the Indy 500.  When he won his first Indy 500 race, he had been in over 600 races spanning 20 years.  He said he believed being a professional race car driver wasn’t just limited to driving, but that it included designing, building, setting up and maintaining the race cars.

One of the most interesting things about Bobby, is that he started visualizing about winning a race when he was only 8 years old!!  He said that early in his career he learned to visualize situations and solutions, such as accidents and how to work around them, and that visualizing solutions helped you develop new ways to improve.

Visualizing certainly worked for Bobby!!  He is one of the world’s most successful race car drivers.  He has raced in 4,000 races and won the Indy 500 three times - 1968, 1975, and 1981.  His other successful careers include being a Race Analyst and Commentator for ABC and CBC, one of the corporate industry’s premier spokesmen, and a successful author.  Today he works as an expert witness and accident reconstruction consultant, and is currently working with ATA Associates, Inc., in Clear Lake City.

The most amazing thing about Bobby Unser is not his incredible accomplishments and achievements, but his enthusiasm for life, his strong belief in integrity, and living the Golden Rule every day by always doing the best for everyone.  Bobby believes that desire is the one secret great equalizer in every person’s career and that goals give your desire direction.  He is living proof that desire, goal setting, and believing in yourself works.  One of the goals of my interviews is to focus on accomplishing dreams and living lives of excellence, and Bobby is truly a wonderful role model, and a real inspiration to follow your dreams.

This interview is very inspirational and motivational, just like Bobby Unser’s wonderful book, “Winners are Driven”.
