Nydia Byrdine (Thomas) Masten Mrs. Nydia Byrdine (Thomas) Masten passed from this life Sunday Morning, August 3, 2008, at home surrounded by her family.

Born September 5, 1918 in Lansing, Michigan, Mrs. Masten moved to Hitchcock in 1947 where she raised a large and loving family. She was employed as an assistant Postmaster for the Galveston Post Office for 15 years, was past secretary for the APWU and had managed the Dairy Queen at 61st and Broadway in Galveston. Mrs. Masten was a longtime member of Highlands Baptist Church where she served in the “Young At Heart” seniors group, enjoyed traveling and especially loved being with her children and grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Baxter Masten; parents, Wilbert and Gertrude (Six) Thomas; son, Floyd Thomas Masten; grandsons, James Spiers, Greg Saunders and 3 brothers.

Survivors include her sons, Jon Saunders and wife, Linda of Jacksonville, FL, Bill Masten of Hitchcock; daughters and sons-in-law, Merlyn and George Spiers of LaMarque, Patty and Tony Reid of LaMarque, Beverly and Sonny Hildebrand of Santa Fe, Trudy and Gene Austin of Santa Fe; daughter-in-law, Alice Masten of Santa Fe; sister, Amy Jean Fletcher of Niles, MI; 23 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren and numerous great-great-grandchildren. 

Funeral services will be conducted 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 6, 2008, at Highlands Baptist Church, 2908 Cedar, LaMarque, TX 77568, with Reverend Leon Maxwell and Brother Chuck Robberts officiating. Interment will follow at Grace Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Hayes Funeral Home.

Casketbearers will be her grandsons, Gene Austin, II, J.J. Hildebrand, Tommy Hildebrand, Darrell Masten, Eddie Masten, Floyd Masten, Jr., George Spiers, Jr. and Tim Spiers. Honorary casketbearers will be Jon Saunders, Jr., Robert Saunders, Terry Saunders and Tom Saunders.

Friends may call from 5 - 8 p.m. Tuesday with a eulogy of family reflections beginning at 7 p.m. at Hayes Funeral Home, 10412 Highway 6, (409) 925-3501.
The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff of A-med Hospice, especially, Mary, Trudy, Ryan, Patty, Pam, Laura, Eva and Michael for the love and care they provided during their mother’s illness.
