James A. Mitchell
E. R. Johnson Family Mortuary

James A. MitchellJames A. Mitchell, 73, passed away August 1, 2008, at UTMB after a brief sickness.  James was born April 14, 1935, in Willis, TX (Mt. Zion Community) to the late Owen A. and Carrie Mitchell.  He was the youngest of this union, whose nickname was “Spruce”.  He was a faithful member of Jerusalem Baptist Church in Galveston, where the Rev. A. S. Johnson is the pastor.  He was the lead singer for a variety of gospel groups, but his love was being a member of the Jerusalem Gospelaires.  James was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Malinda; daughter in law, Wanda; brothers, O.A., Ephram, Rev. Sim Hampton, Ruben, and Herman; sisters, Emma, Ruth, Alvia, nephews, nieces, aunts, uncles, brother in law, sister in laws. 

He is survived by sons, Arthur and Douglas Mitchell; daughters, Cynthia Graham and Andrea McWashington; grandchildren, Amber, Jacqueline II, Joseph Graham, Arthur II, Jessica, Leandra, Nicole, Joseph McWashington, Joshua, Mia, Raven, Trinity; former wife, Virginia Mitchell; 5 great grandchildren; sisters, Doris McDaniel (Matthew), Marie Simpson, host of nephews, nieces, cousins, sister in laws and friends;  a very devoted provider and friend Mrs. Betty Davis and her family.

Special thanks to the ER staff of UTMB and 4th floor MICU, for making his last days restful and pleasant.
           
Viewing will be held Friday, August 8th in the chapel at E. R. Johnson Family Mortuary from 2-5 p.m., followed by a musical celebration of his life at 7:30 p.m. at Jerusalem Baptist Church.  A service celebrating the life of James Mitchell will be held at 12 Noon on Saturday, August 9, 2008, with Rev. A. S. Johnson, officiating.  Burial will follow at Grace Memorial Park Cemetery in Hitchcock, Texas.
