George Harold (Mike) Helmond, Jr.
Malloy & Son Funeral Home

George (Mike) Harold Helmond, Jr., 72, of Galveston, passed away Friday, September 12, 2008.  He was born to George H. Helmond, Sr. and Agnes Wisrodt Helmond on November 24, 1935, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Galveston.  He attended Galveston public schools and graduated from BallHigh School in the Class of 1954.  George then attended Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas.  He then entered the Electrical Apprentice School of Local 527 IBEW.  Upon completing his four year course, he worked for 45 ½ years as a master electrician.  He was a member of Local 527 IBEW since April 1957.


George served his country in the United States Army twice.  He was stationed at Ft. Chaffey, Arkansas in 1958 and then at Ft. Lee, Virginia in 1961.


George has been a member of Trinity Episcopal Church since birth.  He was a Past Master Concillor of the Galveston Chapter of DeMolays.  He was also Past Master of Tucker Lodge 297 AF&AM in 1979-1980 and 1983-1984.  A 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and Past Director of El Mina Shrine Temple, George was also a member of Galveston Elks Lodge #126, BPOE.  He enjoyed fishing and hunting with his close friends all his life.


George was preceded in death by his parents and his wonderful wife, Ruth Dinklage Helmond.


He is survived by cousins, Margie Kelso Schwalm, Betty Kelso Schroeder, Kathrein Helmond Christian, H. V. Miller, Frances Wisrodt Rolen, and Barbara Wisrodt Roebuck; nephew, T. H. Dinklage and wife, Marilyn, and their son, Brandon; sister-in-law, Marion Pool; and numerous friends.


George’s family will receive visitors from 10:00 until 11:00 am, Saturday, October 11th, at Emken Linton Funeral Home in Texas City.  Funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday at the funeral home, followed by Masonic graveside services at GalvestonMemorial Park in Hitchcock.


Pallbearers will be members of Tucker Lodge 297 AF & AM.  Honorary pallbearers will be Richard Lane, Donnie Hanson, Leslie Nolan, and Sean Hawes.


In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in George’s name to your favorite charity.
