Lorenza Mavis- Matthews
E. R. Johnson Family Mortuary
Mrs. Lorenza Mavis- Matthews, 84, received her reward of eternal rest on Wednesday October 23, 2008, at her residence.
She was born on January 11, 1924, to Alanzo, Sr. and Carrie Davis- Mavis in Galveston. And to that union, along with herself were born, Rita Mavis- Harris, Alanzo Mavis, Jr., John Oscar Mavis (all whom preceded her in death). She was also preceded in death by step sister: Nadine Logan; step brother: Larnell Mitchell, Sr.; step mother: Annie Mavis (Curtis Matthews); devoted cousin: Myrtle Lee Rhone.
Lorenza attended East District Elementary School and Central High School in Galveston. She also graduated from Tyler Barber College in Tyler, TX. She was a honorable self- employed barber for over 50 years.
She accepted Christ at an early age and was a life long member of the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church. She was a faithful member of the senior choir and kitchen ministry.
She was a loving sister, mother, grandmother, and friend. “Mama Lo” as she was affectionately called was a special “Momma” to all she met.
Those left to cherish memories are her daughters: Rita Semont and Loraine Banks- Williams; granddaughters: Kari Banks and Michele Semont; step brother: Reginald Pope; step sister: Viola Burroughs; special friends: Mary Francis West, Juanita Mack, Rose Matthews, and Andrew Morgan: and a host of other relatives and friends.
Viewing will begin at 1:00 PM, on Saturday, October 25, 2008, followed by a service to celebrating her life at 2:00 PM, at the Avenue L Baptist Church, with her pastor, Rev. A. W. Colbert officiating. Burial will follow at Lakeview Cemetery.
