Planning Office Issues Record Number of Permits
The City of Galveston’s Planning Department has issued more than quadruple the normal number of building permits in the one month time period after Ike. From September 15th to October 17th, 2008, the office issued more than 2,200 permits compared to a typical month’s average of 500.
Construction Permits 671
Roof and Fence Permits 105
Electrical Permits 1369
Mechanical Permits 151
Total Permits 2,296
“We continue to do our best to accommodate the public as they arrive in our office with questions and building permit requests,” noted Planning and Community Development Director Wendy O’Donohoe. “Due to the extent of damage across the island, we typically have a line of waiting customers,” she acknowledged. “To expedite the process we have brought in additional city staff as well as changed our procedures to make them more efficient,” O’Donohoe added.
