Mary Helen Buckley
Malloy & Son Funeral Home

Helen departed her earthly journey on October 30, 2008, at 3:52 a.m.  She died as she wished, at home, in her bed and surrounded by her family and friends.  Helen is preceded in death by her husband of sixty years, Joseph Patrick Buckley, Sr., who died on May 17, 2000.

Helen was born on January 2, 1924, in Bakewell, Tennessee, to Calvin & Ethel Ledford.  She moved to Galveston at the age of fourteen and married Joe at the age of sixteen.  She resided in Galveston until her death.

Helen lived her life with dignity and integrity; she chose to live her life as a devoted daughter, wife, mother, sister and friend.  Helen spent her life unselfishly and spoke with gentleness, compassion and conviction.  Her morals and scruples were beyond reproach.

Helen enjoyed annual returns to Tennessee to visit her family and friends and always enjoyed a short trip to the casinos; she loved the sounds of the quarters and the bells and whistles; she also enjoyed her numerous trips to New Orleans and Café Du Monde.

Helen is survived by her son, Joseph P. Buckley, Jr., daughter, Elizabeth A. Giles, son, Calvin E. Buckley, PhD., son, Kenneth W. Buckley and her son by choice, Jorge M. Ardines.  She leaves a legacy of numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and her special great-grandson, “My little Grant,” Corbello.  She also leaves numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Services will be held at St. Joseph’s Galveston Historical Foundation Church located at 2202 Avenue K.  Viewing will be held on Friday, October 31, 2008, from 6-9 p.m. with a rosary at 7:00 pm.  Funeral service will be Saturday, November 1, 2008, at 12 Noon.  Graveside service will follow at Calvary Cemetery.

Her son Calvin, grandsons Eugene, Patrick and Jeffrey Giles, Jorge M. Ardines, and Ron Venable will carry her to her final resting place.

No words can express our sorrow and our lives are forever changed.
