There will be no official observances of Veterans Day on Galveston Island. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 880 and American Legion Post 20 who usually co-sponsor a Veterans Day Program had planned a program to be held at the Viet Nam Memorial at Moody Gardens, have cancelled their plans.
Representatives of the two posts report that their facilities were decimated by Hurricane Ike and their members are overwhelmed by the recovery efforts.
Duke Bright, commander of VFW Post 8566 in Bacliff said that there will be no official program, but that the day will be observed by members of his post.
"We visit and we join in with others make a memorial of what Veterans Day is all about," he said. "It should be every day."
