Mayor’s Holiday Celebration and Tree Lighting at City Hall

Mayor Bill White invites Houstonians to join him, co-host Deborah Duncan and musical guests --  including rising country music star Roger Creager, premier jazz saxophonist Kirk Whalum, and former American Idol contestant Lakisha Jones --  at the annual Mayor’s Holiday Celebration and tree lighting on Friday, December 5 at City Hall in Hermann Square, 900 Smith Street.

This year’s event will pay special tribute to the heroes of Hurricane Ike and all Houstonians who worked tirelessly in our city's recovery.  In addition, with the help of the official holiday tree sponsor, Reliant Energy, the City joins a growing number of municipalities moving toward energy-efficient, cost-saving lighting for their holiday trees.

In addition to Creager, Whalum and Jones, featured entertainers include the Karina Nistal Band (Latin Fusion - voted best contemporary Latin vocalist in Houston), Shawn Welling and Planet Funk, the Ernest Walker Band, Abundant Life Cathedral Choir and many others.

Performances begin at 6 p.m. on stage in Hermann Square alongside the reflection pond, and will be emceed by KHOU’s Deborah Duncan.

With the help of Reliant Energy, the City's official holiday tree gets even greener this year, with the use of LED (light-emitting diode) decorative lights, which are brighter, last longer and are far more energy efficient and good for the environment.  Reliant Energy also is encouraging the public to support AIDS Foundation Houston Red Ribbon Toy Drive by bringing an unwrapped toy to Hermann Square along McKinney Street during a morning drive-by collection, 7 a.m. – 9 a.m., Friday, December 5.  A toy also can be dropped off before the tree lighting event at the Reliant Energy booth at Hermann Square.

Sponsors of this year’s festivities include Reliant Energy, KHOU Channel 11 TV, the Downtown District, Houston Public Library Foundation, the Houston Parks and Recreation Department and the City of Houston.
