Alfio Arcidiacono, 92, of Galveston, passed away on January 19, 2009, at Clear Lake Regional Medical Center in Webster, TX. Alfio was born on February 8, 1916, in Aci Trezza, Sicilia. He was a retired commercial shrimper, known to his fellow fisherman as Captain Smiley. He came to the United States in 1949, proudly became a US citizen shortly thereafter, and began his shrimping career. He was a friend of all friends. Alfio was a member of Sacred Heart Church and a longtime member of the San Giovanni Italian-American Association.
Alfio was preceded in death by his parents and five siblings in Italy. Survivors include his wife, Josephine Arcidiacono, and three sons: Nunzio Arcidiacono and wife, Silvana; Salvatore Arcidiacono and wife, Delma; and Alfio C. Arcidiacono and wife, Kimberly; grandchildren: Alfio J. Arcidiacono; Joann Burke and husband, Matt; Josephine H. Arcidiacono; Salvatore AW Arcidiacono; Anthony A. Arcidiacono; and Isabella Arcidiacono.
Visitation will begin at 5:00 pm, Friday, January 23rd, at St. Patrick Catholic Church. A rosary will conclude the evening at 6:30 pm, led by Deacon John Pistone.
Funeral Mass will be 10:00 am, Saturday, January 24th, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Frank Fabj as Celebrant. Burial will follow the service at Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Alfio J. Arcidiacono, Sammy J. Arcidiacono, Salvatore AW Arcidiacono, Sammy Arcidiacono, Anthony A. Arcidiacono, Matt Burke, Alfio Tropea, and John Landry.
