Mardi Gras in Galveston for Children and Animals
by Jim Guidry
Sunday, February 01, 2009

Galveston Local 571 of the International Association of Fire Fighters is again hosting the Mardi Gras Children's Parade. This year's parade, celebrating "A Salute to Comic Book Heroes", will be held on Seawall Boulevard at 2 p.m. on Sunday, February 22.

The Children's Parade will follow the 11th Annual Krewe of Barkus and Meoux Mardi Gras Parade on Seawall Boulevard, which begins at 1 p.m.

"Pets of all sizes, shapes, and species are welcome," said a flyer for that event, noting that costumes are optional.

A costume contest is planned prior to the start of the parade, beginning at 12 noon. Winners will be invited to walk in the front of the parade and will receive ribbons.

The Pet Parade is sponsored by the Galveston Island Humane Society.  Parade Marshalls include the staff from the Houston SPCA who provided assistance in Galveston following Hurricane Ike.

"They organized rescue teams from across the country to assist with the response, all of whom fed and watered 500 animals that were left in their homes, rescued over 1,800 animals, placed 450 in Houston area foster homes and celebrated nearly 400 miraculous reunions!" said a flyer.
