Velma Jones passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 5, 2009, at CornerstoneHospital in Webster.

She was born September 7, 1923, in Shepard, TX, the fourth child of Fannie and Yancy Dirden. A longtime resident of Galveston, she was a member of Greater Mt. Calvary Baptist Church where she served faithfully until her health began fail. She served in the Senior Choir, as a assistant Sunday school teacher, with the Mother’s Union and Mission II. She was member of City Wide Gospel Chorale under the leadership of Lewis Potts,and Iona Chapter #2057 Order of Eastern Star.

Her parents, daughter, sisters, and brother preceded her in death.

She leaves cherish memories with her daughter: Bonnie Dent; sister: Juanita Carter; grandchildren: Kenneth, Robert, and Michael Dent, Sr.; eight great grandchildren; devoted friends: Blanton Blackstrom; Lois Barron; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Visitation will begin at 12 noon on Wednesday, February 11, 2009, followed by a service celebrating her life at 1:00 PM at the Greater Mt. Calvary Baptist Church with Pastor Timothy Allen, Sr. officiating. Burial will follow at LakeviewCemetery.
