by Jim Guidry
Friday, February 20, 2009

The Philadelphia Mummers Quaker City String Band has arrived in Galveston for Mardi Gras 2009 for performances at parades and other events during the celebration. Listen: RealPlayer  MP3 (This audio is in stereo)

Mardi Gras sponsor George Mitchell was at the first performance of the Mummers at Hotel Galvez. In an interview with GuidryNews.com, Mitchell recalled that he and his wife Cynthia Woods Mitchell brought Mardi Gras back to Galveston in 1985.

"It's been a great Mardi Gras," Mitchell said, refering to the two decades of celebrations since the beginning. "This year is going to be a good one too. It has got off to a good start."
