Mardi Gras sponsor George Mitchell was at the first performance of the Mummers at Hotel Galvez. In an interview with GuidryNews.com, Mitchell recalled that he and his wife Cynthia Woods Mitchell brought Mardi Gras back to Galveston in 1985.

"It's been a great Mardi Gras," Mitchell said, refering to the two decades of celebrations since the beginning. "This year is going to be a good one too. It has got off to a good start."
