William Smith (Bill) Fernandez
Carnes Brothers Funeral Home
GALVESTON - William Smith (Bill) Fernandez, 84, died Tuesday, March 24, 2009, after a lengthy illness with Alzheimer's at Oceanview Transitional Care Center in Texas City, Texas. A funeral service will be held Monday, March 30, 2009 at 2:00 pm, in the chapel of Carnes Brothers Funeral Home, 1201 Tremont, Galveston with Rev. Darrell Boswell officiating. Burial will follow at Galveston Memorial Park Cemetery in Hitchcock, Texas. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm, Sunday, March 29, 2009.
Bill was born in Galveston on July 22, 1924 to parents, Pete Fernandez and Gertrude Monroe Fernandez. He attended school in Galveston and joined the Navy, fighting in the Pacific during WW II. After returning from his military duties, Bill was a Galveston City Fireman for approximately 25 years until becoming injured in a fire truck accident forcing him to take early retirement. He was well known around Galveston for his kind heartedness and generosity. One example of this was his long commitment of helping blind individuals on the island. It was normal for Bill to be caring for blind individuals at any given time. Bill would do their shopping, help clean their house, read to them from the paper and anything else that they needed.
Preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Flora Mae Ainsworth and brother, Peter H. Fernandez, Sr., Bill is survived by his nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Pallbearers will be members of the Galveston Fire Department.
