COM Jazz Combo Garners Honors at North Texas Jazz Festival
Friday, May 08, 2009
(TEXAS CITY) - The College of the Mainland Jazz Combo participated at the University of North Texas Jazz Festival in Addison on April 16-18. The Jazz Combo under the direction of Sparky Koerner, professor of music, was invited after submitting an audition CD.
“This was a great experience for the members of the jazz combo” said Koerner. “They had the opportunity to see 45 jazz groups from 15 different states around the country”.
Groups included high school, community college and university; vocal, combo and jazz ensembles.
“The students were able to attend master classes and clinics presented by jazz educators from the University of North Texas,” noted Koerner.
The COM Jazz Combo performed three selections that included: “Blue Bossa” by Kenny Dorham; “Waiting” by Idrees Sulieman; and “Take Your Pick” by Hank Mobley. The Judges commented on the “nice dynamics, good intonation, excellent style / interpretation and excellent soloist in the group”.
Jazz combo trumpeter Kim Chavez was singled out for the “Outstanding Soloist Award” for the combo.
“Kim has been performing with the jazz combo for a few years now and continues to show much maturity in her jazz improvisations” Koerner said.
Chavez also received the Outstanding Soloist Award of the day for trumpet players at the GCIC Jazz Festival on April 4, 2009.
Koerner thanked the Hamman Foundation for a $1,500 grant that helped defray the cost of the trip.
