2009 Memorial Day
Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center
News Release
Friday, May 22, 2009

On most Mondays, Shangri La is closed to the public. However, in observance of Memorial Day, Shangri La will be open from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm. The public is encouraged to enjoy the beautiful gardens and take a boat ride to the beaver pond at Beaver Pond Outpost. Electric boats will leave every hour on the hour to ensure as many people as possible experience this unique natural wonder.

The Garden Store and Star and Crescent Moon Cafe will also be open.

At 2:30 pm, a special Memorial Day Ceremony will begin. The First Presbyterian Church minister, Reverend Michael Umbenhaur, will present a Memorial Day message followed by two patriotic songs from the Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School Pop Group, directed by Meridith Johnson. After a ceremonial ringing of the Great Bell at Shangri La, the public will be asked to observe one minute of silence to honor those who have given the ultimate price for their nation. Rebecca Kent will close the memorial service by playing Taps.
