Joyce Elaine Fernandez

Joyce Elaine “Nanie” FernandezJoyce Elaine “Nanie” Fernandez, 78, of Galveston, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 22, 2009, at The Cottages in League City, TX.

Funeral service will be 11:00 am, Thursday, May 28th, at Malloy & Son Funeral Home with Rev. Alan Taylor officiating.  Burial will follow the service at Calvary Cemetery in Galveston.

The family will receive visitors from 5:00 until 7:00 pm, Wednesday, May 27th, at Malloy & Son Funeral Home.

Joyce was born November 30, 194, in Galveston, Texas.  A lifelong Galvestonian, Joyce graduated from Ball High School in 1949 and worked for Strachan Shipping Company as a bookkeeper for 34 years.  In her retirement years, she lovingly cared for her grandchildren.  Joyce attended St. John’s Lutheran Church, Zion Lutheran Church, and Church of the Living God.

Joyce had a special love for small children, music, and flowers, which brought her much joy.  She could always find beauty in the simplest things in life, even finding a wildflower in a field of green grass would bring a smile to her face.  She will be remembered as a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, and sister.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, Eddie Lee and Florence Marie Thomas; husband, Tony Fernandez, Sr., and two brothers: Robert Lee Thomas and William Edward Thomas.

Left to cherish her memory are her sons: Carlos Gonzalez, Jr.; Michael Gonzalez; and Antonio Fernandez, Jr. and wife, Shonda; daughters: Suzanne Beaird Stephenson and husband, Richard; and Laura Gomez and husband, John; sisters, Gloria Giusti and husband, Frank; and Rose Schmalzried and husband, Bill; grandchildren: Nick Jaramillo, Daniel Jaramillo, Jr.; Michael Mendez, Jr.; Matthew Mendez; Jamie Fernandez, and Brianda Wilks; 5 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Joyce’s family wishes to extend special thanks to The Cottages of League City; Hospice Care Team, Inc.; and Libby’s Place for their compassionate care.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
