COM announces more town hall meetings

TEXAS CITY - College of the Mainland President Dr. Michael Elam is holding a series of town hall meetings in June to learn how COM can better serve its district residents. All meetings are from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at or near the city halls.

A town hall meeting for Hitchcock has been rescheduled for Tuesday, June 2 at the city hall. A town hall meeting in Dickinson is scheduled for Thursday, June 4 in the Dickinson City Council Chambers. Other confirmed dates in June are:

League City, June 16, at a location not yet determined;

Kemah, June 18, council chambers at city hall; and

La Marque, June 23, community room next to city hall.

Cheerleading, basketball and canoe camps at COM

TEXAS CITY - College of the Mainland offers basketball, cheerleading and canoe camps for teens and preteens this summer at its Texas City campus.

A canoe camp for boys and girls ages 10 to 14 will run June 6 through June 11

from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Participants will be shown the basic skills needed to maneuver a canoe and will have a chance to practice these skills on COM’s Lake Eckert. The sign-up deadline is June 4.

A basketball camp for boys and girls 11 to 14 years of age will be held June 15 through June 19, from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Participants will be taught the fundamentals of dribbling, shooting, passing and man-to-man defense. On Friday, June 19, participants from the camp will have a chance to display their skills in an organized game for parents and friends to attend. The sign-up deadline is June 11.

A cheerleading camp for girls and boys ages 4 to 18 will be held June 22 through June 25, from 8 a.m. to noon. This fun and educational camp will focus on the basic techniques of cheerleading, cheer and dance choreography, and a last day recital. Instructors will provide personalized attention to each child by breaking the camp into small groups according to age. This camp is open to girls and boys, beginner through advance levels. The instructors will include Victory Elite Cheer Academy staff as well as former University of Houston, Texas Southern University and San Jacinto College cheerleaders and NCA staff members. The sign-up deadline is June 11.
