Wanda Joyce Schmidt

Wanda Joyce Schmidt“And whosoever believeth in me shall not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16

On the morning of her 83rd birthday, June 12, the Lord called our beautiful mother home to be with Him and our Dad.  Funeral services will be held at Carnes Brothers Funeral Home, 1201 Tremont, Galveston, Texas, Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at 1:00 pm with Rev. David Green officiating. Visitation will commence on Tuesday from 11:00 am until service time.

Wanda was known to her grandchildren, great grandchildren and every child she ever met, as Mawsie. She was loving and generous and never missed an opportunity to give a smile and a hug to every child she happened to meet.  She will be forever loved & greatly missed by her family and many friends.

Wanda was born in Raymondville, Texas on June 12, 1926, and she moved to Galveston when she was a teenager.  She met and married our Dad at the young age of 18 – a marriage that lasted 64 years until the passing of our Dad this past April.  Mom worked alongside Dad in the family business and was highly regarded & loved by all who knew her.  She will especially be remembered for her sharp wit and unique personality.

Wanda was preceded in death by parents Carrie Mae & Lloyd Austin Smith, brother Walter Joseph Smith, sister Pi Wittge & husband Roy, sister-in-law Katherine Ann Lhoste & husband Eugene, brother-in-law Robert R. Schmidt, Jr. & wife Ernestine, niece Joyce Ann Elfstrom, in-laws Nora Emma & Robert R. Schmidt, Sr. and beloved husband Edward Sr. & son Edward Jr.

She leaves behind to celebrate her remarkable life, her brother Lloyd Austin Smith, Jr., daughter JaRue Schmidt Mansfield, sons Fred Burke Schmidt, Sr. & Eugene Sylvaine Schmidt & wife Joan.  Daughter-on-law Debbie Schmidt, grandchildren Stacie Renee Tucker & husband Doug, Fred Burke Schmidt, Jr., George Edward Schmidt & wife Yvette, Crystal Kay Schmidt, Blake Austin Schmidt & Jean Marie Schmidt.  Great grandchildren Haley Marie Schmidt, Trey Schmidt, III, Kaili Renee Tucker and numerous nieces, nephews & friends.

Pallbearers will be family members & friends.

Wanda’s family extends a loving thanks to special friend Shawn Lewis.  Thanks also to caregiver Sue Barton, Dr. Alvah Cass of UTMB and Kimberly O’Rourke, Galveston EMS supervisor.

In honor of Mom’s love of children, donations may be made in her name to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

Friends may sign the register book and send the family condolences at  Please include the Schmidt name.
