Donna Sabanovich TownsendDonna Sabanovich Townsend passed away Friday, June 12, 2009 at Regent Care Center in League City, Texas at the age of 95. 

She was born in Galveston, Texas on September 20, 1913 to Leon and Milica Sabanovich, and lived her entire life in Galveston.  She attended Ball High School and married E. B. “Ted” Townsend on October 5, 1938.  She was employed at American National Insurance Company until later deciding to stay home to care for her family.  Her hobbies included reading, sewing including crocheting and embroidery, gardening, cooking and baking, especially her famous cakes.  However, her greatest joy throughout her life was in loving and caring for her family.  She was a truly wonderful and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.

Donna volunteered for many organizations including St. Mary’s Hospital Auxiliary, Sacred Heart and Dominican PTAs, Galveston Garden Club, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts.  She was a member of Sacred Heart Church.

She is survived by her daughter, Bernetta Koehler, and husband, Rip; her grandchildren, Donna Mencacci, and husband, Frank, Bubba Koehler, and Melissa Perales; and her great-grandchildren, Ted Mencacci, Lee Mencacci, Collin Koehler, Lexie Koehler, and Ethan Perales. 

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 50 years, Ted Townsend; infant son, Ted Leon; parents, Leon and Milica Sabanovich; sisters, Mary Dyer, Sophie Marsh, Martha Rollish, Angie Orange, and Gertrude Lillard; and brother, Gus Sabanovich.

Visitation will be held at 5:00 pm, Monday, June 15, at Malloy & Son Funeral Home.  A rosary will begin at 6:00 pm, led by Deacon John Pistone. 

Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 am, Tuesday, June 16, at St. Patrick Catholic Church with Father Frank Fabj as Celebrant.  Burial will follow the service at Galveston Memorial Park in Hitchcock.

Pallbearers are Collin Koehler, Ted Mencacci, Lee Mencacci, Frank Mencacci, Mimo Milosevich, Michael Perales, Travis Tucker, and Justin Tucker.  Honorary pallbearers are Billy Proctor, Johnny Smecca, and Wayne Tucker.

The family wishes to express heartfelt gratitude for the excellent care given to Donna to the staff members at Summerville of Friendswood, Regent Care Center, Regency Hospice, Marti Tucker, her special niece,  Rip Koehler, her son-in-law, and Melissa Perales, her granddaughter.
