Galveston’s Mary Moody Northen Endowment awarded a grant to help fund the recent Underground Railroad Reenactment, a project of Galveston Historical Foundation’s African-American History Committee. Children walked through Underground Railway “stations” set up in Kempner Park and relived the stories of men and women who had escaped slavery via the railroad. Project Chair Tommie Boudreaux (right in first photo) accepted the grant during the event from Mary Moody Northen Endowment Executive Director Betty Massey. Funding from the Endowment and others helped replace canopies and supplies lost during Hurricane Ike, making it possible to produce the reenactment during the community’s celebration of Juneteenth.
