Carolyn Christine McDaniel – Chris to her many friends – died of cancer Monday at Mainland Medical Center in Texas City. She was 76.
She was born the third of 10 children to Bernice and Carrol Mobley on April 12, 1933, in Brunswick, GA. She lived her entire adult life in Galveston, where she met her husband of 55 years, the late H.L. “Mac” McDaniel. She was a devoted mother of four (two children, a Chihuahua and a Shih-Tzu), an ardent churchgoer, a tireless employee of the Galveston Independent School District (She was a longtime cafeteria supervisor at Island/Parker Elementary.), and the best friend anyone could hope to have.
She considered herself uneducated but she was learned and talented in her own way. She could cook, sew, refinish furniture, garden and gamble (She loved Las Vegas.) like a professional. She may not have had a high school diploma, but she managed to get her two kids through college. What truly made her special was her spirit. She made and kept friends easily.
In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by sisters, Evelyn Lewis, Audrey Roberts, and Lois Mobley; and brother, Alvin Mobley.
She is survived by her children, Carol Boggus and Michael McDaniel; sisters, Clarice Leneave, of Paducah, KY; Yvonne Lewis, of Nahunta, GA; brothers, Carlos Mobley, of Sellersville, PA; T.J. Mobley, of Dudley, NC; Lewis Mobley, of Waynesville, GA; and a host of nieces and nephews.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 pm, Thursday, July 9th, at Malloy & Son Funeral Home, 3028 Broadway, Galveston.
