The Friendswood Independent School District Board of Trustees on Tuesday voted unanimously to approve a proposed tax rate of $1.04 for maintenance and operations and $0.327 for debt service, for a total property tax rate of $1.367 per $100 valuation.

The school board voted unanimously to schedule a budget workshop for August 18 at 6:30 p.m. The school board will hold a public hearing on August 31 for the 2009-2010 budget, and must approve a budget that day.

The school board voted unanimously to increase the purchasing authority of the superintendent from $10,000 to $25,000.

"The District has had at least two occasions in the past year where we have had to take immediate action to procure goods and/or services that exceeded the $10,000 limit," Superintendent Trish Hanks said in her report. "At the June 9, 2009 Board meeting, the Board unanimously voted to delegate authority to the Superintendent to make purchases valued at $25,000 or less that relates to construction matters under the current bond program at her own discretion. However, the district would like to make the $25,000 limit applicable to all purchases."

The school board voted unanimously to approve salary adjustments for five positions in the district. Of the positions four were secretarial, with the high school secretary receiving a $1,500 increase, the junior high assistant principal secretary receiving $1,717, the assistant superintendent secretary receiving $8,848, and the deputy superintendent secretary receiving a $1,500 increase. The payroll supervisor position received an increase of $5,094.

The school board voted unanimously to employ Amanda Hartley as theater arts teacher for Friendswood Junior High and Patricia Robinson as licensed specialist in school psychology for the 2009-2010 school year.

The school board voted unanimously to approve an agreement with the Galveston County Extension Office. The agreement recognizes county extension agents as adjunct staff members and counts students participating in 4-H/Extension educational activities as in attendance for school purposes.

All other items were approved by unanimous vote. All members were present. Agenda
