Sammie Burton was born to Sam and Faustine Burton on March 21, 1925, in Denison, Texas. He was the fourth of five children born to this union.
Sammie was educated Denison, and graduated from Terrell High School in 1943. He later attended Prairie View A & M College, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in industrial education. After college, he served in the United States Coast Guard.
Upon moving to Galveston, he united with Myrtle "Lil Bit" Bruno, the mother of his two daughters. Sammie was employed by Todd Shipyards for thirty- five years. He was later united in marriage to Irma Jean Potts.
Sammie entered into eternal rest on August 22, 2009. Waiting to greet him in heaven are his parents and four siblings. He leaves to cherish memories of his life, his wife, Irma Jean Burton; daughters, Sheila Burton Bruno and Antoinette Regina Burton; seven grandchildren; seven great- grandchildren; a host of nephew, nieces, and many more friends and family.
Visitation will be held today, August 26th, from 3- 6:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, August 27, 2009, both in the chapel E.R. Johnson Family Mortuary, 3828 Avenue O in Galveston. Internment will follow at Forest Park East Cemetery in Webster, Texas.
