John Joseph (Juanjo) Carmona, Sr.John Joseph (Juanjo) Carmona, Sr., 73, of Galveston, passed away Tuesday, September 1, 2009, at UTMB Hospital.

 

Funeral Mass will be 10:00 am, Friday, September 4th, at St. Patrick Catholic Church with Father John Paul Flajole, OFM, as Celebrant.  Entombment will follow the service at Calvary Catholic Cemetery Mausoleum.

 

John’s family will receive visitors after 5:00 pm, Thursday, September 3rd, at St. Patrick Catholic Church.  A rosary will begin at 6:30 pm, led by Father John Paul Flajole, OFM.

 

John was born September 12, 1935, in Galveston, Texas.  He attended Our Lady of Guadalupe School and Kirwin High School before joining the US Merchant Marines.  John held many jobs during his working years, including Galveston Transit Company, Druss Army & Navy Store, Galveston Daily News, and Coors of Galveston County.  He retired in 2005 from the City of Galveston Municipal Utilities Water Department and worked part-time in his retirement for the Galveston Boatman Association.

 

John was an avid sports fan, having played baseball as a young man and coached girls’ softball for several years.  He loved watching his hometown Astros and Texans and also rooted for the LSU Tigers and Texas Longhorns.

 

John was preceded in death by his parents, Trinidad and Otilia Carmona; brothers, Salvador and Jesse Carmona; sister, Rachel Hernandez; and first wife, Olga Sosa Carmona.

 

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Elaine Carmona; daughter, Mary Margaret Ruiz (Robert) and niece/daughter, Margie Chavarria (Albert); sons, John J. Carmona, Jr. (Ray); Michael R. Carmona; and Capt. Tommy Martinez (Cindy); sister, Vangie Rodriguez (Robert); brothers: Sr. District Judge Frank T. Carmona (Vera); Alfonso T. Carmona, Jr. (Cynthia); Javier Carmona (Pat); and Jose Alfonso Carmona (Rachel); sister-in-law, Josephine Carmona; grandchildren, Melanie M. Tovar (Jose, Sr.), and Robert Jason Ruiz (Iliana); great grandchildren: Jose L. Tovar, Jr.; Kiara M. Ruiz; Nicolas M. Tovar, Jaelynn Ruiz, Zachary Castillo, and a great grandson due in November; mother-in-law, Phillipa Gonzalez; two aunts, 1 uncle; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

 

Pallbearers will be David Lewis, Albert Chavarria, Sr., Thomas C. Hernandez, Al Carmona, Jr., Doug Godinich, and Paul David Carmona.

 

Honorary pallbearers will be Robert Rodriguez, Andrew Longoria, and Mario Zepeda.

 

Memorials may be made to the Ronald McDonald House of Galveston.
