Annie Marie Simmons was born on July 25, 1949 to Roscoe Simmons and Lonnie Marie Simmons. “Ann” as known by her family grew up in Galveston, attended public school at George W. Carver. She was a graduate Salutatorian of Central High School Class of 1967. Ann furthered her education at North Texas State University, Denton Texas with a B. A. Degree in Psychology (Major) and Biology (Minor).
Ann was baptized at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church of Galveston under the leadership of the late Rev. T. J. Anderson. She continued to serve under the current leadership of Pastor A. W. Colbert. Her affiliations include Mass Choir, Women’s Ministry, Tutorial Coordinator, SKILS program, Church School instructor. Ann served as the First Vice President of the Old Landmark Baptist District Association and teacher for the Congress of Christian Education.
She was a charter member and founder of Epsilon Mu Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Ann was the first African American woman elected to the GISD Board of Trustees. She served for 18 years and retired from the Board in May 1999.
All of her life was given to the education of Galveston County as a teacher, librarian, research assistant trainee, and a drug counselor intern. She was a powerful woman with numerous affiliations. Ann was the Dean of Galveston College, City Councilwoman, motivational speaker and teacher of the same.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Monnie and Johnnie Mae Henderson, father Roscoe Simmons, Sr., uncle, M.J. Henderson, aunt, Mary Washington, brother Harvey Simmons, niece La Shon Deitriece Simmons, and great-nice Damari Deitriece Temple.
Her survivors include a devoted mother Mrs. Marie Simmons, of La Marque, Texas; two sisters La Shon Simmons of Galveston, and Sandra Turner of La Marque, Texas, brothers Danny Montgomery (Linda), Rosce Simmons, Jr. (Sarah), Marvin Simmons, Earl Simmons (Pat), Walter Simmons of, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and guardian-daughter, Shirley and grand guardian-son, Elon.
Visitation will be held Friday, September 4, 2009, from 1:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. followed by a wake 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Wynn Funeral Home - 602 32nd Street, Galveston, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 5, 2009, at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. A.W. Colbert officiating. Burial will follow at Hayes Grace Memorial Cemetery in Alta Loma Texas.
