To commemorate the Anniversary of Hurricane Ike, the Galveston Housing Authority hosted a community event entitled “Road to Restoration” on Monday from 2-4 p.m. at the Island Community Center.
"In Galveston, 569 of the Housing Authority’s family housing units, grouped at four apartment complexes around the city, were devastated by Hurricane Ike," said a news release. "In addition, many homes that are part of the federal Section 8 housing assistance program managed by the Galveston Housing Authority were lost in the storm. The Galveston Housing Authority has moved quickly since the storm to serve all of the displaced families of GHA. The damaged buildings have been demolished and the Housing Authority has hired an A&E firm to conduct the master planning process at the four developments; Cedar Terrace (2914 Ball), Magnolia Homes (1601 Strand), Oleander Homes (5228 Broadway) and Palm Terrace (4400 Sealy). A series of design workshops were conducted and provided former residents the opportunity to give their idea of what future housing should look like."
News Release
Workers who stayed in town after the storm and worked sometimes under trying conditions for long hours at remote locations were honored at the event.
Mayor Lyda Ann Thomas, Galveston Police Chief Charles Wiley, former Galveston mayor Barbara Crews, Galveston City Manager Steve LeBlanc, Executive Director of St. Vincent's House Michael Jackson, President of Galveston Economic Development Partnership Jeff Sjostrom, Galveston Housing Authority Executive Director Harish Krishnarao and Housing and Urban Development officials were some of those in attendance.
