Eligh SmithEligh Smith was born on May 29, 1927, to the union of Ed and Melissa Smith in Morrow, LA. He came to Galveston at an early age and was employed as a machine operator with ILA Local 1504 for over 35 years before retiring. After retiring he worked as a attendant at Solo Laundry and also loved driving his family and friends around and out of town, or wherever they to needed go. He was a faithful member of Jerusalem Baptist Church and loved his pastor.

Mr. Smith known by many as "Galveston's Cucumber, Paw Paw, Pops," walk of life on earth ended on Sunday, September 20, 2009, at his home in League City surrounded by his children and ex wife, Jessie, when God called him name.

Preceding him in death was his parents, children, Eddie, Robert, Greg, and Rudy: siblings, Edward, Gus, James, Bessie, Dorothy, Elvira, and Olivia; mothers of his children, Vera, Jeraline, and Ethel; cousins, Ed and Cephus Pleasant, Johnny Glenn, Wilbert Chambers, Shed, Buckwheat and Yoyo.
Left with precious memories are his sons, Rev. Eligh Johnson (Maggie), Harvey (Sherry), James (Carolyn), Vincent (Nell), Eligh, Jr. (Bernice), Reginald (Pelisa), Issac, Damion (Lashonda), Derrick, and Darrell (Lois) Smith; daughters, Betty Smith, Sandra Hale, BB Johnson, Jennifer Hull (Emory), Myra Tryals (Ricky), Theresa Dennis (Willie), Sheila Brown (Charlie), Pamela Smith, LaShonta (Kenneth), Stephanie (Rodrick), Alicia, and Keisah Willis, Terricka (James), Tosha, Synneda and Sumika Ashton; siblings, Chaney Scott (Ed), Edna Pleasant, Julia Douizee (Willie), Paul and Sherman Smith, aunt, Lizzie Smith; foster sister, Ida Green; mothers of his children, Shelia Williams, Adrelean and Jessie Ashton Smith; special friends, Corine Joshua, Billy Chambers, Alfred, Wokf, Tom Chaney, Wilbert August, Lester Maverick; host of grandchildren, great and great great grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

Visitation will begin at 5 PM on Friday, September 25th followed by a wake from 7-9PM at Jerusalem Baptist Church. A service celebrating his life will be held on Saturday, September 26, 2009 at 11:00 AM also at the church with Pastor A.S. Johnson officiating and  Rev. Eligh Johnson eulogist. Burial will follow at Lakeview Cemetery.
