"Coping with the Holidays" grief support groups

Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Chanukah can be particularly difficult for those going through them without their loved ones for the first time. Grief can be magnified by holiday sights and sounds, and memories of a loved one who has died can come rushing back on special days.

In response to this need, Hospice Care Team offers a special 4-week group series called “Coping with the Holidays.” Facilitated by bereavement professionals, these groups help adults who are grieving to cope with the special feelings that may arise during the holiday season. Those who are grieving are encouraged to attend all four group meetings in the series (at the location most convenient to them) for maximum benefit from the education and support the groups provide.

In order to fully serve the needs of those who are grieving throughout the Bay Area, HCT will offer its “Coping with the Holidays” groups in Galveston, Clear Lake, Dickinson, Alvin and Lake Jackson this holiday season. Each of the five group series will meet in these locations starting the week prior to Thanksgiving, skip Thanksgiving week and return for three weeks in December.

On Tuesdays, beginning November 17th, four group series will begin. Our Alvin groups will start the day, from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m., at the Alvin Community Center. Our Dickinson groups will be meeting at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m., and our Lake Jackson groups will meet at the Carriage Inn Retirement Community from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. Our Clear Lake groups will close out the day, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday evenings.

On Wednesdays beginning November 18th, the Galveston group will return to Edgewater Retirement Center at Moody House from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m.

Each group series is open to anyone in the community who has had a loss, regardless of whether their loved one was on hospice service. Our groups are offered free of charge, but as space is limited, it is recommended that you call to register in advance.

For further information, or to register for HCT’s grief support groups, please call Rebecca Deaton, Director of Bereavement Services at 800-545-8738.
