Veterans Day at Houston City Hall

Wednesday, November 11, 2009
Houston Mayor Bill White welcomed a large crowd of military veterans and supporters of the armed forces to the Veterans Day Program on the steps of City Hall.
Chief Warrant Officer Five Candis "Candy" Martin, a veteran of the Iraq War and a Gold Star Mother whose son died in combat, was the keynote sepaker.
Martin recalled her son’s words at the end of their final conversation, after she expressed a mother’s concern for his safety, “Mom, it's what we do."
United States Congressman Gene Green, flanked by four other members of Congress, presented a Congressional Certificate to Martin.
"In Washington, you wouldn't probably hear all five of us agree on anything," Green said. "Except we agree on the service of our veterans; and they protect our rights every day that we serve in Congress."
