Mary Theresa ContiMary Theresa Conti, 82, of Galveston, Texas, passed away peacefully at her son’s home in Texas City on Friday, December 4, 2009, surrounded by her loving family. 

 

Mary’s family will receive visitors after 5:00 pm, Sunday, December 6th, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.  A rosary will be held at 6:00 pm.

 

Funeral service will be 2:00 pm, Monday, December 7th, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father E.J. Stein, OFM, officiating.  Entombment will follow at Calvary Catholic Cemetery Mausoleum.

 

Mary was born September 2, 1927 in Apalachicola, Florida to Giovanni and Santa Greco, Mary spent her first 5 years there, then moved with her family to her parents’ hometown of Aci Trezza, Sicily, Ital.  When her family moved back to the states, Mary stayed behind to help her aunt in her bakery.  At the age of 18, Mary came to the US to join her family living in Galveston.  Two years later, she traveled to Italy to marry and returned to Galveston, where for 48 years, she shared her life with her husband, Sebastian, and her three sons until the death of her husband in 1992.

 

Mary was our devoted family matriarch who will be missed by many.  She loved to cook and bake and was a master of both.  She was also an avid gardener, loved to crochet, and enjoyed taking bus trips with her many friends to Coushatta.

 

Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Sebastian Conti; brother, Tony Greco; nephew, Johnny Greco; sister, Annie Vasta; nephew, Congeto Vasta; and her niece, Helen Amato Gonzales.

 

She leaves behind to mourn her loss but cherish her spirit her many family members and friends, including her sons: John Conti and wife, Karen; Sebastian Conti, Jr. and wife, Clare; and Anthony Conti.  Mary had 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren: John Conti, Jr. and wife, Katy, and their children Tyler and Kalley; Laci Conti; Jeff Conti and wife, Michelle and their daughter, Charlee; Sebastian Conti, III; Ellen Cody and husband, Clay and their son, Carson; and Andrea Burdine and husband, Jason.  Her extended grandchildren are Laura and Garrik Addison, Sammy and Melissa Parks, Sara and David Spence, and Maggie Curtis.  Mary is also survived by three sisters: Josephine Arcidiacono, Helen Amato, and Geneva Loiudice; 20 nieces and nephews; and her former daughter-in-law, Teena Kennedy and husband, Steve.

 

Pallbearers will be Sebastian Conti, III, John Conti, Jr., Tyler Conti, Jeff Conti, Clay Cody, and Jason Burdine.  Honorary pallbearers will be Sam and Angelina Fichera; Joe and Lucy Castorina; Joe and Anna Grillo; and Alfio and Lucia Tropea.

 

The family would like to extend their gratitude to the Hospice Care Team members Tommie, Mary Beth, and Lupe for the care given to Mary.

 

In lieu of flowers, Mary requested donations be sent to Hospice Care Team, Inc., 1708 Amburn, Suite C, Texas City, TX 77591.
