Food Bank Receives Incentive Check as Part of TNMP’S Commercial Solutions Program

TEXAS CITY, TX  – Gleanings From The Harvest will receive an incentive check of $4,989 from the Texas-New Mexico Power (TNMP) Commercial Solutions Program for upgrading the efficiency of air conditioning and lighting systems in what will be Galveston County’s first countywide food bank. TNMP Commercial Solutions is a no-cost program that provides technical and financial support to help businesses identify and implement energy efficiency upgrade projects.

Gleanings From The Harvest began renovating the 11,500 square-foot facility, formally occupied by the Texas City Sun, in 2007 when the city of Texas City agreed to lease the empty property. Once completed, the new building will improve the organization’s ability to store and distribute food, including refrigerated and frozen items like dairy products, meat and eggs.

Mark Davis, executive director of Gleanings From The Harvest, said, “Efficiency is a key element of our energy future, and we are committed to setting a positive example in our community. The combination of greater energy efficiency, lower energy bills and improved facilities made investing in this project an easy decision.”

The new, high efficiency air conditioning and lighting systems will save nearly 36,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity each year, equivalent to the carbon dioxide emissions of about 2,900 gallons of gasoline, according to Environmental Protection Agency calculations.

As part of its participation in the program, Gleanings From The Harvest will continue to evaluate additional efficiency opportunities. “We look forward to continuing to work with TNMP and the Commercial Solutions Program to identify ways to further reduce our energy use,” said Davis. “It’s the right thing to do, and it also makes sound financial sense as the reduced energy use generally offsets the cost of the initial investment.”

“We’re very pleased with this addition to our energy efficiency program portfolio,” said Tony Thompson, TNMP Program Manager. “The project that Gleanings From The Harvest recently completed is exactly the type of efficiency project the Commercial Solutions Program was created to encourage.”
