Galveston Hotel - The Tremont House Hosts Exhibit Highlighting 26 Years of Mardi Gras

The Tremont House’ first Mardi Gras Ball hosted by Cynthia and George Mitchell was held on Feb. 16, 1985 with the revival of the city’s celebration of
Mardi Gras in Galveston. In 1985, ball goers were entertained by live performances by the Jim Cullum Jazz Band, Russell Jackson and Brennan’s Bunch and the legendary jazz clarinetist Pete Fountain. Ball goers also watched the first Knights of Momus Grand Night Parade as it passed in front of the hotel in grand style. The first mile-long parade was a “Salute to the Age of Mythology” and drew an estimated 75,000 people.

The hotel invites the public to see its collection of Mardi Gras Ball invitations dating back to 1985 during a special exhibit held in conjunction with ArtWalk on Saturday, Jan. 23 from 6 to 9 p.m. The exhibit is called The Tremont House Celebrates Mardi Gras - 26 years of Celebration through Invitations and Doubloons. Every year, the George Mitchell family produces a custom invitation and accompanying doubloon to celebrate the hotel’s annual celebration of Mardi Gras.

The Tremont House Annual Mardi Gras Ball and Parade Viewing Party provides one of the best vantage points to watch the Momus Grand Night Parade. Over the years, the hotel has celebrated Mardi Gras with various themes including its salute to Hollywood, Texas, the Roaring 20’s, Broadway, and Circus as well as Parisian Nights, Venetian Nights, Cosmic Carnival, Carnaval de Brazil, Viva Espana, and Viva La Noche just to name a few.

This year, The Tremont House, a Wyndham Grand Hotel, celebrates “A Chinese New Year” at the 26th Annual Mardi Gras Ball and Parade Viewing Party on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010. A portion of the proceeds from the ball benefits Rosenberg Library. For information on these events, call (409) 763-0300, email tremonthouse@wyndham.com, or purchase ball tickets online at www.Galveston.com/MardiGrasBall. Event information is also posted at www.Facebook.com/TremontHouse.
