Harry Hudnall Hughes, Sr.
Malloy & Son Funeral Home

Harry Hudnall Hughes, Sr.Harry Hudnall Hughes, Sr., 92, of Port Bolivar, passed away Monday, January 18, 2010, at The Arboretum in Winnie, Texas.

 

Funeral service will be 11:00 am, Friday, January 22nd, at First Methodist Church in Port Bolivar, with Rev. W. C. Hall officiating.  Burial will follow in the Port Bolivar Cemetery.

 

Harry’s family will receive visitors after 5:00 pm, Thursday, January 21st, at Malloy & Son Funeral Home, 3028 Broadway, in Galveston.  A Masonic service will be held at 6:00 pm, under the auspices of Harmony Lodge #6 AF & AM of Galveston.

 

Harry was born September 16, 1917, in Galveston, Texas.  He attended Ball High School and then served his country in the Pacific as a member of the U S Army during World War II.  Harry married his wife of 60 years, Vera Cecilia Hughes, on November 16, 1946, and spent his life working as a grocery store owner, farmer, and rancher, selling many a watermelon and cantaloupe on the side of the highway.  Harry was an active member of his community, serving as a school board member for the Port Bolivar School; an original board member of the Port Bolivar Water District; a board member for Galveston College; and a volunteer firefighter with the Port Bolivar Volunteer Fire Department and Ambulance Service.  He was also a member of the Galveston Farm and Ranch Club, the Galveston Harmony Masonic Lodge #6 AF & AM; and the First Methodist Church of Port Bolivar.

 

Harry was preceded in death by his parents, George Lawrence and Kate Shell Hudnall Hughes; his wife, Vera Cecilia Hughes; and his sister, Cleo Hawes and her husband, Jack.

 

He is survived by his sons, Harry H. Hughes, Jr. and wife, Alice, of Needville, TX; and George E. Hughes and wife, Debbie, of Port Bolivar, TX; daughter, Karen Ann Hughes Price and husband, Bain, of San Angelo, TX; brothers-in-law, L.D. Ward and Jack Neuner, both of La Marque, TX; sister-in-law, Olive Krell and her husband, Willard, of Texas City, TX; grandchildren: Lori Ann Klawinsky, Shelley Lynn Mays, Kyle J. Hughes, Katie Faye Fenner, Stormy Barrow, Cody Hughes, Nathan Hughes, Hannah Manion, and J.B. Price; great grandchildren: Hope, Camren, Nathan, Madison, London, Kyleigh, Corbin, William, Steven, Wyatt, and Clayton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

Pallbearers will be Nathan Hughes, Cody Hughes, Kyle Hughes, J.B. Price, Steven Fenner, and Marcus Klawinsky.  Honorary pallbearers will be Michael Mays, Robert Barrow, and Wes Manion.

 

Harry’s family wishes to extend special thanks to the nurses and staff of The Arboretum of Winnie for their compassionate care.
