New COM exhibit features Depression era photography

on Porch by Eudora WeltyTEXAS CITY – The College of the Mainland (
www.com.edu) Fine Arts Gallery will present an exhibit of Depression era photography by the late Eudora Welty who is perhaps best known as a Pulitzer Prize-winning author. Welty, who died in 2001, was a young publicity agent for the Works Progress Administration (WPA) in rural Mississippi during the 1930s when she began taking photographs on her own time. Welty captured some memorable photographs during the Great Depression of people from all economic and social classes.

Welty went on to become an award-winning author who wrote short stories and novels about the American South; yet her images of everyday people going about their daily lives in small Southern towns during hard times told stories, too.

The Welty exhibit will be at COM from February 4 through March 10. There will be a discussion and reception February 9 at 12:30 p.m. and the public is invited to attend.
For more information or gallery hours, call 409-938-1211 or 888-258-8859, ext. 354
