John Karacostas, Jr.On Thursday, February 4, 2010, Johnnie Karacostas, Jr., 68, passed away in Galveston, Texas, at UTMB.

John was born in Hershey, Pennsylvania, April 20, 1941, to John Karacostas, Sr., and Mary Filowiat Karacostas.  After his family moved to Texas, he grew up in Galveston and graduated from Ball High School in 1960.  He served in the National Guard from 1963 – 1969.  He was a member of the The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Galveston Lodge #126. He was also a member of The American Legion Post #20 where he was a former Post Commander.

On January 26, 1963, he married Rayma Jean Watson in Galveston, Texas, where he worked on the Galveston Wharves as a member of the International Longshoremen’s Association until retiring in 2006.  John enjoyed playing golf, hunting, and spending time with his friends and family.

Survivors include his wife, Rayma Karacostas; son, Tim Karacostas and his wife Pat; daughter, Susan Tweedy and her husband Steven; sister, Rosemary Rodriguez and her husband Robert; grandchildren, Steven Karacostas, Chase Karacostas, and Erin Tweedy; niece, Rene’ Rodriguez; and nephew, Robert Rodriguez.  He was preceded in death by his parents John Karacostas, Sr. and Mary Filowiat Karacostas.

Visitation will be held from 2:00-5:00 p.m., Sunday, February 7, 2010, at Malloy & Son Funeral Home, 3028 Broadway, Galveston, Texas. Funeral service will be held at 2:00p.m. on Monday, February 8, 2010 at Malloy & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow at Galveston Memorial Park Cemetery, 7301 Memorial Street, Hitchcock, Texas.
