Houston Independent School District
Department of Athletics
News Release
Saturday, February 06, 2010

Houston TX – The Houston Independent School District’s Department of Athletics will present a showcase of Houston-area senior girls student-athletes who have yet to earn an athletic college scholarship.

Following the success of the boys Senior Showcase from March 2009 when more than $19,159,000 was awarded to graduating football players, the district decided to have a similar forum for its female student-athletes. Student-athletes from basketball, soccer, softball, track and field and volleyball will perform skills and speed drills as well as participate in competition in front of the college scouts. HISD has also opened the event to female student-athletes from surrounding districts.

“The purpose of the showcase is to promote our female student-athletes and provide them with the opportunity to tryout and possibly compete on a college level,” said Sharla Odhams, HISD athletic program administrator.

The day-long event, which is scheduled for Saturday, Apr. 17, will be held at Finnegan Park. More than 150 female student-athletes are expected to compete in front of at the college coaches and recruiters.

Although most senior athletes sign by early spring of their graduating year, the district believes that it is never too late to earn an athletic scholarship from a college. Oftentimes, it has been lack of exposure for the student-athletes as well as not understanding there are scores of schools available and not just the big name schools.

“I believe there are young female athletes that are overlooked because of various reasons,” Odhams said. “I know from experience that publicity and exposure can be lacking at times. So it is our hope to create opportunities for more of our area student-athletes to have the possibility of moving on to the next level.”
