Westbury’s Forensics Team are City Champions
Houston, TX- Westbury High School’s Rebel Forensics Speech and Debate team are city champions in Policy Debate. The team received first place at the Houston Urban Debate League City Championship Tournament on March 6, 2010.
Seniors Goran Flajc and Sarah Iwuchukwu have qualified for the National Association of Urban Debate League’s National Tournament to be held in New York City April 23-25.
This is the third National Tournament sponsored by JP Morgan Chase. There are approximately 26 Urban Debate Leagues across the nation. Each UDL sends the two best teams of their city.
In addition to the student competition, coaches will attend professional development seminars to strengthen best practices in the Urban Debate Network. The event will conclude with a dinner featuring keynote speaker Penny Pritzker, civic and policy leader as well as member of President Obama’s Economic Recovery Advisory Board.
Westbury’s talented debaters have had an amazing season as they also represent Westbury as the UIL District Champions. Before heading off to the Big Apple, Goran and Sarah will be competing at the State UIL Tournament in Austin, March 19-20.
This is Westbury’s second consecutive year to hold both the District and City Champion titles. Under the direction of coaches Marsha and Stephen Jump, the Rebel Forensics team has grown exponentially in size and substance. The program also boasts awards in Lincoln Douglas Debate, Prose Interpretation, Poetry Interpretation, and Extemporaneous Speaking.
