Saturday, March 20, 2010

Liz Carpenter, a longtime friend and employee of former President Lyndon Baines Johnson and his wife Ladybird, died this morning in Austin.  She was 89.

"Liz Carpenter was a Texas trailblazer whose fierce independence and sharp mind consistently placed her near the center of power throughout her life," said Texas Governor Rick Perry. "She embodied the legendary qualities of Texas women and showed America that gender is irrelevant when it comes to getting the job done. Her voice will be missed, but not forgotten. Anita and I extend our sincere condolences and prayers to her family, friends and admirers all over the world."
