Dr. Abraham Wuchin Hsie
Carnes Brothers Funeral Home

Dr. Abraham Wuchin HsieDr. Abraham Wuchin Hsie age 70 of Galveston died Saturday, April 10, 2010 at John Sealy Hospital in Galveston. Funeral services are 11:00 am Thursday, April 15, 2010 at Carnes Brothers Funeral Home in Galveston. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Wednesday where a reception will be held.

Dr. Hsie was born March 3, 1940 in Hsinwu, Taiwan to Gong Wie Hsie and Main Lin Drawng Hsie. He was a longtime Microbiology Professor at UTMB retiring in 1999. He was a regular at the UTMB Field house where he would work out and inspire many friends to accomplish all they could. He was a generous man who enjoyed helping people. Dr. Hsie was a member of many professional organizations including numerous leading scientific editorial and advisory boards. He was very proud to be a distinguished Alumnus at Indiana University where he earned his PhD. He continued his post doctoral studies at the University of Colorado.  He was the Group Leader of Genetic Toxicology at the Oak Ridge National Laboratories from 1973 until 1988 when he joined UTMB. Dr. Hsie was a Microbiology Professor at UTMB from 1988 until his retirement in 1999. He was regularly listed in the Who’s Who in America for many years.

Survivors include his loving wife of 48 years, Mayphoon Hsie of Galveston; son, Marvin Hsie and wife Carla of Scott AFB, Illinois; daughter, Dora Hsie-Hilty and husband Jay of Denver, Colorado; grandsons, Caelen and Finn Hilty; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, many friends and professional colleagues.

The family would like to express their sincere thanks to Dr. Russell LaForte, Dr. O. Adam, Dr. Hsie’s physical and occupational therapist Kimberly and Denise, the tremendous staff at UTMB ER and ICU for their compassion and concern for Dr. Hsie during his illness.
