Raymond Simmons
Fields-Johnson Family Mortuary

Raymond SimmonsRaymond Simmons, 77, received his reward of eternal rest on Friday, April 9, 2010 at his residence surrounded by his family.

 Raymond was born to the late George and Elizabeth Simmons November 11, 1932 in Wilmington, NC.  A loving and devoted husband and father, Raymond was raised in Galveston and was a 1952 graduate of Central High School. He also graduated from the College of the Mainland’s Substance Abuse Program. He was the owner of Raymond’s Lawn Service and was employed by the Gulf Coast Center.  He could be found any time promoting salvation and sobriety to all he met. A selfless man, he volunteered weekly at Gulf Health Care. He served as a deacon with the Bible Way Baptist Church under the leadrship of Pastor Otha Ross.

Raymond was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Edward “Peaches” Simmons, Leroy Simmons, Joseph "Boopop" Simmons, and Robert (Bobby) Simmons; nieces, Wynona Simmons Lister, Jeanine Simmons, and nephew, Ronnie Simmons.

He leaves to cherish his memories his devoted wife of 56 years Lurlene Biggers Simmons, his sons Joseph (Gerri) Simmons, Alvin (Sharon) Simmons, Kevin (Tanya) Simmons; daughters  Deborah Newby Ward, Cheryl “Sue” (Charles) Johnson, and Raylene (William) Morgan; sisters- in-law, Zanzinne Nolan and Betty Simmons; brothers-in-law, James (Gloria) Nash, Rev. George (Linda) Flakes and Curtis (Francis) Stansberry; devoted niece, Rosalind Simmons and granddaughter, Roshanda Courville; 22 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren. 

Viewing will be held from 3-5PM, Friday April 16th at Fields-Johnson Family Mortuary. The family is inviting those who wish to share moments of reflection to join them at the Bible Way Baptist Church (32nd & Ave. M) from 7-8 PM Friday, April 16th for a memorial service.

A service celebrating his life will begin at 11:00 AM on Saturday, April 17, 2010, at Jerusalem Baptist Church (2717 Ball) Rev. A.S. Johnson, pastor, Rev Otha Ross officiating. Burial will follow at Lakeview Cemetery.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to UTMB staff Dr. Russell La Forte, the oncology team led by Dr. Abdullah; Leon McGrew, Ricky Holbert, Lauren Perez, Oreara Scott, and Lucy Salazar.
