Galveston Early College High School unveils the first official mascot in school history
Eagles named the winner from six choices after students campaign for their favorite logo

GALVESTON, Texas – Galveston Early College High School (GECHS) unveiled its first official mascot in front of its excited student population on Tuesday morning after an extensive selection process. Students voted on the new mascot from six different choices: the Wizards, Pirates, Jets, Starfish, Whales, and Eagles. The winner: the GEC Eagles.

“Everyone at the school is excited about being the Eagles,” said Principal Deb Owens. “It was great that students learned about the campaign and voting process. Most importantly, they learned how their decisions will have a lasting impact on future generations of students that come after them.”

GECHS is halfway through its first year in operation and has been so successful it will be relocating to its own building next year at the former Scott Elementary School campus. GECHS now hosts sixth grade students. The 2010-2011 school year will include 7th graders as well. The school went through most of its first year without a mascot to call its own.

To facilitate the search, GECHS asked the public and asked them to submit suggestions for a new mascot. After considering all public submissions, GECHS administrators narrowed the choices down to six logos for its 6th-graders to vote on the school’s new mascot. To incorporate the search into the learning curriculum, administrators helped students form campaign committees, and each logo was assigned a campaign manager.

The final vote took place on Thursday, April 15. The votes were tabulated and the students got a look at the Eagles logo during their lunch period in the Austin Middle School cafeteria on Tuesday afternoon, April 19. Members of the GECHS Leadership Council, GISD administration and the GECHS PTO were in attendance.

GECHS logo and Members of the Galveston Early College High School Leadership and distinguished guests gather around the new GECHS logo they signed: L-R, Mike Verale, Galveston Fire Chief; Harry Powell, Vice-President of Galveston College; Joseph Hugger (seated), Eagles Student Campaign Manager; Jeffrey Poarch, Graphic Design Artist; Deb Owens, GECHS Principal; Dana Miller, GISD New Teacher Coordinator; Susette Mahaffey, District Testing Coordinator; and Veronica Hugger, GECHS PTO President.
