Hi. I’m Pat Patton. I have a very special and multi-talented guest today, award winning songwriter, performer, and recording artist Kelly McGuire. Listen: RealPlayer MP3
This interview is so special to me because Kelly and I have been friends since we met in 1998 at the Silver Dollar Ball. At that time, Kelly offered me the incredible opportunity to perform with him and his band members Mike Cooley, Robert Hooper, and Clint Hebert, and at the 1999 Silver Dollar Ball, I was rocking and rolling on stage with them and having the time of my life!! I “performed’ my two favorites songs, "Club Blonde" and "Youth is Wasted on the Young” with Kelly and his band at many events over the years.
Kelly was always one of my favorite guests on my radio shows. He was my guest many times over the years on my radio shows on Star Radio 101.5 FM – KSTB with Al Mainwairing, and Kelly was my very first guest when I started my radio show “PAT PATTON’S WHAT’S HAPPENING IN THE BAY” on KGBC AM 1540 in 1999. I was also Kelly’s publicist for a few years. I had my first Guidry News Service interview with Kelly on July 7, 2002. As you can tell, Kelly and I share a lot of history together, so it was really great to have a chance to interview Kelly again.
What is exciting to me is that when I met Kelly in 1998, he was a local entertainer. But by 2001, Kelly went from being a local entertainer to a national entertainer. Now, Kelly not only performs throughout the United States, he also performs in Mexico, Belize, and Canada.
Kelly’s first CD was “Redfish Island” - “Margaritaville Meets Nashville on the Texas Gulf Coast”. Kelly’s second CD, “Club Blonde”, was a collection of songs he wrote with a country flavor. It was recorded in Nashville.
He had two singles on the radio, and “Wasted on the Young” reached #10 on Texas Music Chart.
Kelly’s third CD was “Boat In Belize”. Kelly wrote all the songs like he did for “Redfish Island” and “Club Blonde”, but this time he produced it all. He hired the players for parts he didn’t play, and he did the arranging, mixing, and editing. Talk about talent and creativity!
Some of Kelly’s song writing awards are: UNISONG International Songwriters Contest: 2nd Place – Country Division - “Daddys & Daughters”; Finalist in TNN (The Nashville Network) Songwriting Contest; Texas Music Awards: 2008 ALBUM of the YEAR - “BOAT IN BELIZE” CD, 2007 and 2008 Nominated Entertainer of the Year, and 2008 Nominated Producer of the Year for the “BOAT IN BELIZE” CD, and Country Music Association of Texas: the 2002 Indie Artist of the Year. In 2003, “Wasted on the Young” reached #10 on the Texas Music Chart and #52 on Nashville’s Music Row Breakout Chart.
Kelly’s CD’s can be purchased through Kelly by email - firstname.lastname@example.org or by phone at 281-332-8595, and also at My Texas Music, CD Baby, and at Tropical Express in Kemah. One of the goals of my interviews is to focus on accomplishing dreams and living lives of excellence, and Kelly is definitely a perfect example of that. Kelly is one of the most creative people I have ever known. Creativity means “marked by the ability or power to create”, and that certainly describes Kelly. Kelly not only writes his own music, but he is a very talented artist, and his beautiful paintings are placed throughout his house. I am very proud of Kelly’s success in all arenas.
Just when Kelly thinks he is safe, I will show up at one of his events to perform "Club Blonde" and "Youth is Wasted on the Young” with Kelly and his band. Who knows, I may be discovered. Now, if I could only sing.
