Brazoria County
Brazoria County Commissioners Court
by Garrett Bryce
Thursday, May 20, 2010

Brazoria County Commissioners Court, during a special meeting on Wednesday, voted unanimously to approve an exemption to state competitive bidding requirements for the county's purchasing director to procure items for the Alvin Public Library.

Purchases of more than $25,000 require competitive bidding under state law.  However, state law also allows exemptions under certain circumstances, including if "an item that must be purchased in a case of public calamity if it is necessary to make the purchase promptly to relieve the necessity of the citizens or to preserve the property of the county".

The Alvin library recently suffered damage from a fire, and requires repair and replacement of some items.

A public hearing was held to receive input on the matter prior to the vote.

No other items were on the agenda.  All members were present.  Agenda
