Howard Johnson

Howard JohnsonHoward Johnson was born May 1, 1935, in Waller County, Texas to Ella and Joe Johnson. Howard, affectionately known by his family as “Mickey” grew up in San Felipe, Texas where he attended Pattison and San Felipe schools. 

As a young man he moved to Galveston, Texas where he met his wife, Martha Jeanette Irving Johnson. The two were united in matrimony February 20, 1965 and later had three daughters together. Howard diligently worked in maintenance for Galveston Housing Authorities for 40 years and also established his own Johnson’s Plumbing business, which he operated until his illness in late 2009. Known as “Cowboy” to his many friends, Howard enjoyed working, watching sports, fishing and above all, deer hunting. 

Howard was a dedicated member of St. John’s Baptist Church and  the usher board under the leadership of Rev. Louis Simpson. 

Howard Johnson departed this life and went home to glory on Tuesday, June 15th. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Joe Ray, Roosevelt, Willie [Leo], and Robert Johnson; sisters, Margie Johnson and Ella Roy Lyons; daughter, Genera Lynn Charles; and great-grandson, Shannon Dion Walker. 

He leaves behind many loved ones to cherish memories of him: devoted wife of 45 years, Martha Johnson; daughters: Audrey Johnson of Laurel, MD, Cynthia and Erica Johnson  both of Houston, TX; granddaughters: Madison Owens of Houston, TX and Robin and Charles, Markeisha Rideaux of Port Arthur, TX; great-granddaughter: Anihja Lynn Walker; sisters: Annie Bell Campbell of Hempstead, TX, Doris Dean Bolden [Bennie]  of San Felipe, TX, Sadie Mae Washington and Helen Johnson of Galveston, TX;, brothers: Raymond Johnson of San Felipe, TX and Joe Dell Thomas of Hempstead, TX; sister-in-laws: Mary Lillie Gibson of Galveston, TX, Mary Louise Ricks [James] of Houston, TX, Rita Irving of Hitchcock, TX, Evelyn Hunter [Charles] of Missouri City, TX, Marilyn Irving of Greenbelt, MD, Debra Ann Cooper [Ronnie]  of Hitchcock, TX; brother-in-law: Moses Leonce Irving, Jr.; and a host of nieces nephews other relatives and friends.

 Visitation for Mr. Johnson will be held from 10:00 A.M. until service time at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, June 19, 2010, at St. John Baptist Church, 2917 Sealy, Galveston, TX with, Pastor Louis Simpson, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Hayes Grace Memorial Park in Hitchcock, TX.
