Carnes Brothers Funeral Home

John Gordon Benge, Sr.John Gordon Benge, Sr. age 93, passed away Tuesday, November 5, 2010 at his residence in Galveston. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm Friday, November 12, 2010, at First Baptist Church in Galveston, 822 Trermont with Reverend Doctor Grayson Glass officiating. The family will receive visitors at Carnes Brothers Funeral Home, 1201 Tremont, Galveston, Texas from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Thursday, November 11, 2010.

John was born August 14, 1917 in Maydelle, Texas to John M. Benge and Nancy Catherine Sherman Benge. He married Lillian Lee Nolan on October 30 1941. He was employed by the Galveston Typewriter Exchange as a typewriter repair technician, keeping the office machines at The Corp. Of Engineers in working order. He enlisted in the U. S Army December 7, 1942 and served in the European theater. He served with pride until December 28, 1945. He then went into business with Frank Crowder co-owning Galveston Typewriter Company, continuing his keeping office equipment going all over Galveston. Upon the death of Mr. Crowder, John became sole owner of the company. Hurricane Alicia demolished the shop and after the clean-up there was a fire that destroyed the Washington Hotel. He spent more than 10 years working at The Moody House in Central Supply and various other fields assisting Rev. Ray Pinard in many areas and worked with Lillian Lee in the Meals On Wheels program. He joined the First Baptist Church of Galveston when he was 24 years old and has been a faithful member ever since.

Preceded in death by his wife of more than 59 years, Lillian Lee Nolan Benge, and grandson, John C. Benge, John is survived by his son John G. Benge, Jr. and wife Yvonne  from Schertz, Texas; grandson and wife, PO 1st Class Darrell J. Benge and wife Sandra of Kempner, Texas; granddaughter, Dana Lindwedel and husband, James of Schertz, Texas; great grandchildren, Patricia, Shannon, Christina, Mason and Jacob Benge and Kayla and Brittani Lindwelel other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers will be Darrell Benge, James Lindwedel, Tom Farmer, Ted Farmer, Robert Drake and Wayne McHenry.

Memorials may be sent in John’s name to the First Baptist Church Restoration Fund, First Baptist Church, 822 Tremont, Galveston, Texas 77550.

Friends may sign the register book and send the family condolences at  Please include the Benge name.
